For Kyriakos, Riley was there (so far) for four OOC months which is actually about a month in game! Currently, in game, she is with an Echo (or NPC) because she decided she needed to figure out who she is before she figures out who "Rainbow Lark" is. It was a REALLY long month.

She arrived in Kyriakos on a team called Takshaka. In its past it's been called the hero team or the "cute girls and their maid" team. Everybody has a name with a bird and a color, Riley ended up with "Rainbow Lark". She shut down and panicked immediately, but people got her to calm down! Except one teammate, Nightingale, looked at her like a kicked puppy and that set a bit of her feelings on being there forever. Then another teammate that was new showed up... so. That didn't help, but they had dinner and went to bed.

The next morning, however, Takshaka decided it was time to have a murder game and alliance talk. They went straight into telling her about all the gruesome ways she might die and how it was likely to happen again soon, in spite of a ban. In natural Riley fashion, once again, she shut down and in trying to calm her down her teammate decided... to tell her she was brave because the rest of the world was destroyed and she's still here. Way to go.

She shut all of her feelings inside of herself being afraid that she wasn't strong enough for Takshaka. This only amplified in the coming weeks when trauma games happened and Takshaka lost not one teammate, but over six. Which was/is an entire team's worth of people. For the most part, Riley was very Riley and embraced everyone andtried to love them a lot. She shoved herself in and when she saw someone she tried to make them feel better.

Riley did attend a trauma game which was fairly mild, but concerning for her. Everyone was turned into bloodlusting monsters and had to earn their way back to humanity. Unlike other teams, Takshaka refused to give up their bodyparts to retrieve items. But Takshaka ignoring her request and shutting her down made Riley cut herself off and stop talking. Things would have been much worse for them if not for another team, Ratatoskr, gave them an extra ingredient sacrificing themselves for Takshaka.

It was shortly later another game like this happened, but it was much worse. Riley did not attend this one, but if she had she would have died with the other members of Takshaka that had been there. When the two came home re-stitched from having their bodyparts torn off and even thrown off a cliff... She kind of just laid in their nestbed with Hope Estheim "Amber Hawk" and cried for a while because she can't deal with that. Afterwards, however, she and Nightingale did something to help heal them by trading their important traits (which is, ironically, the same). And she spent a while bonding with Haruka Nanase from Free who, incidentally, became one of the most important people to her.

These events are what wound up shaping "Lark" the most and had her come to a difficult decision. When she realized she was too afraid to do things, Takshaka's patron invited her to her realm to help gather medicine. Lark joined her not realizing it meant she would not be able to return to Takshaka for a while. But she's taking this time to think about how she can deal and figuring out who "Riley" is so she can be "Lark" too which is to separate entities for her. Also she's dealing with figuring out her feelings for Lucas Friar and Hope/Hawk, but that's not something as major as the rest to her...

It was a few weeks later that she returned to Takshaka and since thing things have had their ups and downs! She's regained some more memories as Takshaka has been on a spree there. And made a new friend in Hiro Hamada/"Flare". Who also there is kind of feelings for and now this is complicated because she recognizes she has feelings for... four or so people now. And everyone is trying to convince her she's in love with Maya and they'll be a couple (something she's unsure about).

But life has been mostly normal!

...Until a few days ago when another trauma game happened. And this time it was a game where people were locked in rooms as pairs and had to barter what they thought the other person's life was worth and hope it was worth more than someone else's. Riley was with Hawk who, actually, they both ultimately came to a decision that meant they committed suicide. On Riley's end it was a realization that she didn't have anything that would compete with magic and power, but on both ends it was that neither of them thought lives were bartering material. There was nothing that could equal a life and if they tried to use something so trivial to save their lives and someone else died they would never live with themselves because of it. So they refused to play... And of course that meant they died.

But after this when they had revived enough to speak both children confronted the Echo in charge of the game. Hawk to tell her to piss off, Riley because she wanted to understand. And what it ended in was, surprisingly, Riley coming away stronger and wanting to enforce the feeling of hope in people. Mind, she's not over dying or anything like that, but she doesn't regret the decision because it was too important.

And it was that decision that made her realize the difference between Riley and Lark and decide, finally, she was far more Riley than Lark and now goes by that name.


Personality:

Shawn: You're Cory with Topanga's hair.

As the self-proclaimed continuation of her family's history, Riley maintains a lot of the core traits of both of her parents. While she's wildly most like her father, she undeniably takes after Topanga in some of the most important ways. The one trait she gets from both of them is their willingness to accept people-- something Cory had to grow into thanks to Topanga himself-- but also her desire to help people and better their lives.

The parent she takes after most honestly and consistently is her father, Cory. Riley is so much like Cory that the first episode replicates a scene from his own youth. When her friend, Maya, stands on top of the desk and starts a rebellion for no homework and more freedom, after a tiff with her father Riley joins right along. This tiff? Riley asked Cory if he knew who she was and his response was of course he did: She was exactly like him. And, unfortunately, by rebelling she did the exact same thing he did in his own homework fiasco.

What Riley gets most from her father is two very fundamental things:

One, she is a very awkward person. She very obviously doesn't understand much about the world and for good reason-- or not so good reason. A part of it is because at the beginning of the series she's only twelve and just embracing the world for the first time. The second is something I will delve further into later in that everyone she's close to has always protected her from things that would hurt her. But this awkwardness extends beyond her misunderstandings of the world.

Socially, Riley is actually a fairly shy person. This is a direct contradiction to what she wants to be at the beginning of the season. We openly see her being delighted about the prospect of going to seventh grade parties. She happily declares that not only will she be going, but she will be the first girl to break the boy/girl boundary that would be there. Then, just as quickly, she states that it most definitely wouldn't be her. Because she knows better.

Riley fumbles a lot. In ordinary situation she is an awkward klutz. This is something that she pokes fun of herself about, but also dislikes greatly. She gets into far too many situations where she gets tricked into something or, worse, used. In large it becomes to this social awkwardness because she doesn't realize that something is wrong about the situation. She immediately assumes everyone will be nice to her and goes along with it, but that's not always the case.

It's this, too, that she gets from her father and it brings us to point two: Her belief in hope and love. To understand a little bit better we need to understand something about her parent's relationship. Not once but twice, Topanga called off their relationship/engagement because she felt their love would fail. Her family was struggling through a divorce that was caused by them falling out of love and so she was terrified the same thing would happen to her and Cory. It was Cory who chased her and refused to give up on their love, even traveling halfway across the country to try and get her back.

Cory believed wholly that their love was meant to be and could not be penetrated. This is a trait he passed down to his daughter, but Riley feels this tenfold. She refuses to give up on love or the idea that people can be loved. In the latter half of season one Riley realized the likeness between Maya and Shawn and decided they needed each other. She then proceeds to spend the next several episodes trying to arrange it so Shawn would become a father figure to Maya. In the recent season two episode 'meets Pluto' she actually yells at him not to be a jerk about things which ends with him coming in her room to talk to the girls. There Riley pointedly told him that, "You loved once, you can love again. Pluto is out there for you. Pluto is believing in something is out there even when no one else does. Especially you, because there is."

It's this belief she gets from her father, but from her mother what she gets most is her morals. She's incapable of lying and deems that the truth is always the most important thing. While this sentiment is brought up in an early season one episode that had Cory teach that the truth should always be said regardless of how hurtful it was, the lesson was brought up once more in a season two episode. In this episode Cory's brother states that maybe Maya was upset about the situation because she felt that the truth didn't matter, but the friendship. Cory tries to defend Eric's sentiment, while both Topanga and Riley argue against it. They both believed that the truth, regardless of who it was, should be honest and true.

This honesty and want to be true is what Riley most gets from Topanga. Cory always conformed to what Shawn wanted. And while at times Riley has conformed to both Maya and Farkle's wants she ultimately decides that's not what she is and that's the end of that. It's brought up in two episodes and she never looks back after those two. This is in large because her and Topanga came to an understanding that it's better to be who you are than be what someone else wants or expects you to be. It's easier to be what someone else wants you to be, but what's not so easy is doing the difficult thing and this is something that Riley has come to embrace.

Facing the difficult things might be something she gets from both of her parents, but Riley continues to be most like her mother in her determination to do things. Topanga is the parent she most wants to be like and wants to make proud, she goes as far as to say she wants to be exactly like her. She knows that while her father tries to help people and better their lives, Topanga is the person that gives people a voice who otherwise don't have one. Unlike Cory, Riley immediately always comes to the answer of something must be done and does it. This is first seen in an episode called meets Smackle where she sees Smackle upset and decides to take her home. This is such a normal thing that Maya walks up groans and later asks Riley why she has to take home every little woodland critter they found. But this extends further and more seriously where in 'meets flaws' she organizes the entire class to speak out against a bully which, again, Maya groans about Riley having to interfere.

The last thing Riley gets from her mother in these situations is that she dislikes the idea of failure. She wants to succeed and despite all her airheadness is actually second to Farkle in grades in their class. This most important thing to her is making her parents proud, but it's also making things right. In class she may only make straight As but she wants to do that in life, too. She doesn't want to give up on something and refuses not to see it through. This in a small part extends to her father's belief, but it's a very inherent thing for her, too. She doesn't want to do someone wrong and so if things are not fixed she will keep on until they are. The perfect example of this is seen above where she practically chased Shawn down to become a figure in Maya's life.

"I take care of my friends. I couldn't let something happen to him. You should know that better than anyone else, Riley." This is a statement by Lucas when Riley approached him about why he lied to her and what he did and, ultimately, this is the thing that is undeniably something she gets from both her parents. Her ability to dream and love come from her father. Her wish for success and determination most comes from her mother. But the thing she gets from both of them is that family and friends will always come first regardless of the situation. Even in the moments she wants to be selfish, ultimately she realizes that's not what's important to her. After all, she says it best in meets gravity, that "we need to circle the ones we love".

Riley:Hey, I have hope for something four billion miles away. You have always been right here.

(GMW S2E4, "Meets Pluto")

The most influential person in Riley's life is her best friend, Maya. Like her father, Riley has a "bad seed" friend and that's Maya. They're considered to be polar opposites and even called alluded to being an angel/devil or light/good by their friends. Maya is considered to be the one that will get them into trouble and Riley's the one that's supposed to get them out of it. Unfortunately, beyond the first episode this hasn't really been gone into, but their friendship ultimately goes above and beyond that.

Their friendship is most symbolized in Riley's bay window-- or as they call it their window. While the girls are considered the new Cory/Shawn duo for the series they ultimately fall very differently. While they've always had Farkle in their lives the girls consider each other the most important in the world. Boy Meets World retconned Shawn and Cory's friendship so that Topanga had always been there and had known Cory longer, but this is the reverse of the love interests in Girl Meets World. Because of this the girls trust each other more than anyone else in the world and it's on that bay window they solve everything. This goes from something as simple as what to wear to a dance to confronting the other about their secrets. Ultimately, it makes them more honest to the other.

Unfortunately, this honesty can get in the way sometimes. On Riley's side it's part of the issue mentioned above where she so wholly believes in the truth that at one time she accused Maya of being a thief and in another refused to defend her when Lucas calls her a name because she couldn't deny it. On Maya's end it comes in the fact that, ironically, there are a few things that Riley doesn't want to talk about with Maya. It's a strange situation where Maya automatically tells Riley whatever she wants, but Riley won't even discuss something like the time she kissed Lucas. Less because she doesn't want Maya to know the truth-- as she does-- but because she doesn't know how to handle it. But that's what the window is for.

The best description of Riley and Maya's relationship is something that the writers released a few months back on twitter. In the last episode of season one, 'meets Demolition', there's a running gag of Maya having Riley searching for an astronaut on a horse and at the very end of the episode they find a miniature statue of one. The writers later explained this after a few fans asked and here's what they said: "Okay, guys. Here's how it goes. A horse keeps you grounded. An astronaut is the friend that floats away. Riley and Maya are an astronaut on a horse."

The best explanation I take from this is kind of two-fold. Most of the time it's Maya keeping Riley grounded. When Riley goes to 'Rileytown' and freaks out about something it's Maya who comes over and settles her down. This is seen in things like trying not to be herself, panicking over Lucas, or not understanding why her parents/brother are upset. Maya explains it, Riley gets it, they fix it and things move on. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, it's Riley that gives Maya hope and belief in things. Maya doesn't believe she'll ever amount to anything and often cries about her home situation. It's Riley who encourages her to try for what she wants and becomes the shoulder to cry on.

The most important thing about their friendship-- aside from their window (which is more important than any words can describe)-- is their full belief and acceptance of the other. It may be a running gag about how they're polar opposites an still friends, but neither of them think that way. Riley may think Maya is cooler than her and more competent, but that's where it ends. She doesn't see Maya's flaws as bad and nor does Maya see Riley's. Actually, in spite of her nativity and overwhelming silliness at times Maya wants to protect that about Riley and even mentions how she never wants that to change.

(In short these girls are practically married and trump everything else going on in their world. Even in Riley's first date with Lucas, he understands that Riley can't concentrate on that and encourages her to go be with Maya instead when she's upset.)

Maya: Yeah, we are.

(GMW S2E3, "Meets Secrets of Life")

It wouldn't be right to end this part without expanding upon two other very important people in Riley's life, Farkle Minkus and Lucas Friar. As mentioned prior, Farkle has been friends with Maya and Riley since pre-school. The three of them have always been together and, unfortunately, Farkle has always been in love with the pair of them. The girls know this and accept it but always rebuff his advances, which he happily goes along with because ultimately being friends is more important. Lucas is the love interest for Riley and they're very awkwardly finding their footing in where/what they want to be. Right now, however, they've decided they're better as friends and want to stay that way for a while.

The four form a close group that always stick up for the other. They're learning the world together and, even when separated into their individual pairs, are constantly learning about the world together. The boys tell each other almost everything, and the girls most certainly do-- but at the end of the day they all come together. It's this friendship that prevails more than anything, but it's still not quite as influential as Maya/Riley is to Riley's life. Although, Riley did get the important lesson that their friendship is more important than growing up and dating sooner than they wanted and that's just as important as anything else.

The thing that most needs to be realized about Riley is that while all of the core traits above are completely true, there are moments that she's not as solidified as she usually is. This is because "meets Popular" where she decided to change her entire identity in order to fit in and be popular within a group of people (a group of five people, might I add). She even did this in the first episode where she tries to follow in Maya's footsteps, but it ultimately doesn't work out. Even later when some girls try to peer pressure her into discussing her kiss with Lucas Riley denies them but then turns to Maya and asks if she should anyway.

This is because in spite of the fact that she will happily wear ribbons and dance in the middle of the hallway, her friends are the most important thing to her. She weights them above even her own thoughts and ideas. She constantly looks to Maya for the answers to things partly because she doesn't know, but also because she doesn't want to do something that makes Maya (or anyone else) not accept her. This is seen even with Shawn who she says she thinks doesn't like her which makes Maya flip out, but Riley doesn't touch it. She's too afraid to touch it so much that when Maya confronts Shawn you see her go from smiling happily to completely blank and trying to ignore everything being said.

The thing that probably terrifies her most isn't the dark, which does scare her, or things that are different-- but the fact the people she knows doesn't accept or trust her enough to let her know things. In the season two episodes of 'secrets of life' Riley says one of her most defining lines to Lucas: "You think what I'm worried about is what you did? Then you don't know me. And I don't know you. Friends talk to each other, but real friends listen. I'm your friend, I would have listened." In spite of all of personal fears of not being accepted, Riley accepts others whole-heartedly. But the idea that they won't trust her or don't think she will accept them is something that upsets her beyond words. Even Maya is cautious and afraid of Riley as she tries to approach the whole situation calmly, because she knows how important acceptance and truth is to her.

Riley: I don't understand.

Lucas: How can she not know?
Maya: LOOK! A BIRD!

Riley: *turns excitedly to look for the bird*.

The most obvious trait about Riley is that she's, well, she's definitely a bit of an airhead. She only ever wants to believe in hope and dreams. She talks about how no one is a silly, wide-eyed goofball like her grandmother, but Maya smiles knowingly and responds sarcastically that no one's like that. But Maya is most definitely correct in saying that Riley definitely is one. She rarely truly has a bad word to say about anyone. And if she does? She spends a deal of time wandering why it is they're like that instead of accusing them outright. When Farkle is bullied in "meets Flaws" this is seen in the case of Billy who she doesn't understand would treat him like that and wanted, not to prosecute him, but to understand why he would say something like that to Farkle.

(Of course, she does have bad things to say about Missy Bradford. But mostly she wants her as far away from Lucas Friar as possible.)

She doesn't often seem to take things seriously, or if she is prefers to try and make people smile instead. This is in large because Riley can't take bad things happening. She so wants to believe in the good in everyone that her default is think positively about everything. Maya even challenges her about this once asking her about how she could make something like a burning building positive and... Riley kind of just announces something so ridiculous that it actually is positive.

Naive is another important trait about Riley. It's not that she's unintelligent or doesn't know she's being played, because she does realize it, but it's not something that crosses her mind. It comes back to her whole-hearted belief in people never lying to her, but it's something people use against her. Farkle once lied to her about the ingredients in some cupcakes they were selling so she'd keep doing it knowing full well she'd believe it. Even Cory and Topanga used her power of imagination to create an entire life for an egg before smashing all of her hopes and dreams against her.

Most of this boils down to the fact that Riley has a lot of belief and imagination. She doesn't believe in impossibilities. The world hasn't gotten to her enough to make her feel like everything is hopeless. There is always a way to make things better and this isn't something she ever wants to give up on. When something doesn't go her way it upsets her and she doesn't know how to go on from there. That's not to say she stops, but she's definitely got a wrench thrown in her plans that takes a few minutes to bounce back from. Thankfully, that's usually when Maya shows up and they go to their window.

Riley's core traits will always be that she can be more than a little naive and will always believe what people tell her. It doesn't matter if it's a bird in the middle of the classroom an astronaut on a horse, if someone tells her to look for it, she will. This is in large part because, as they say above, both Maya and Farkle have always shielded her from the darker parts of life. They know that Riley is so full of hope and belief and they don't want to be the ones to destroy it. They've known each other since elementary school and it's been that long that the both of them kept, for starters, the truth of Pluto no longer being a planet. She's been sheltered for a majority of her life that, even finding out the truth on Pluto brought her to the brink of tears.

This comes down to the fact that Riley's greatest flaw is also her greatest asset. She will always find hope and belief in something even if things seem like they might go downhill. This may mean that her entire world is shattered when something bad does happen, but it's also this complete and utter belief that allows her to pick herself back up and do something about things. In the end, she always finds something to find as good about a situation and make it her own.

Incidentally, however, all of this is kind of like a switch in Riley. Because she can take things seriously. A large part of her behavior is that she wants to believe and so she lives through the high of that belief. However, when things go wrong or she's had enough, she can shift over at the drop of a hat. In the above quote, she and Maya had just been conned into an expensive purchase by a salesclerk. Her father, too, was and the salesclerk was just barely doing all of this legally so her mother could do nothing about it.

Riley, however, knew what she was doing was wrong and she had a friend who happened to be a billionaire in her pocket. Knowing the older woman preferred people doing the right thing, she made a phonecall and hatched a plan. In less than ten minutes Riley had gotten the girl back and flipped her entire world and mindset upside down. And it's heavily implied that it was mostly-- if not all-- Riley's idea. Which shows that she does have a semi-cruel spot if she thinks someone deserves it. But only if she thinks they deserve it and need to gain a lesson from it, otherwise she'll happily fly through Riley-town for life.

Because Riley is a firm believer in doing the right thing even if it's difficult at the time. She's still not always sure when the right thing is right, but that doesn't stop her from always trying to do so. This does come down to the fact that she will always believe in the people around her and so she wants to do them right-- But maybe she's a bit more liker her father than her mother in that she will aggressively not allow someone to get away with thinking a certain thing. Since, even in the Lucas situation, she shoved him in a car and demanded him tell her exactly what happened. While it's a little less extreme than Topanga doing something like cutting her hair off to prove outer beauty didn't matter... Well, Riley's still got a bit more growing to do and she's definitely shown that she has her mother's assertiveness, at the very least.

Riley: Yeah. Still Pluto. I hope that when we open this again I'll still believe in things.(GMW S2E4, "Meets Pluto")

In the end, Riley isn't the most able person. She doesn't have any truly remarkable definable traits or abilities. She's just a child who's always had someone there to support her and doesn't know how to react without that. In spite of that, she consistently tries to break away and do her own thing only to learn that... What she needs is those people she's leaving behind, and so she always returns. She's a person who won't give up and when pushed too far will strike back. She's not a cruel person and she'll always chase love to the end of the world and back.

She's not the most fit, admittedly. The concept of staying in a bad part of their city terrifies her for years, but eventually she sees it for w hat is and learns to accept it. Because that's the one quality that will assist Riley in her life: her ability to believe, accept, and love things for what they are. She'll have difficulties, certainly, so many of them-- but to her the possibilities are endless and she'll do what she can to help those people she meets.


Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

Just because of the nature of the game she's coming it's easiest for me to have her pulled through unwillingly/through fluxing. Mostly because since she's coming from an amnesia game she wouldn't willingly leave without all of those! In spite of that, she's already used to being in weird places. Riley is a very accepting person-- seen even in the new Halloween episode where she near instantly befriends a ghost.

But you can't get any weirder than Kyriakos. It's also through Kyriakos that she'd be more willing to throw herself out there and talk to people. Since, recently, after speaking to Akasha she decided she needed to help unite all of the different teams if a all possible.

How do you plan to expand their CR?

Riley is most definitely a social butterfly. In her CRAU she knows, at least in passing, almost everyone in the game currently and considers them all friends. She's the kind of person to just make friends with everyone as much as possible. That's what's most important to her. That and helping them. And coming from the point in her CRAU she is she'd be really trying to help work with things and people themselves. There's really not much I can say here because I tend to throw her at EVERYONE and she's been known to make the grumpiest characters happy.

Mostly she will just aggressively friend everyone and try to make them feel better.

What will your character do for work?
Under thirteen! And she would avoid it as long as possible. I'm aware I'll need to find a guardian!
